TurboTax sets the standard for user-friendly, reliable tax products. Offering excellent error checking and on-screen guidance, they offer the most intuitive tax products on the market. TurboTax also offers unparalleled tax support. For $39.95 you can have a professional CPA review your tax return for errors. Also for $39.95, you can purchase Audit Defense, which means that TurboTax will represent you in the event that you are audited by the IRS. The only drawback of TurboTax is that they offer expensive tax products when compared with competitors TaxAct and CompleteTax, who offer a lot of the same services at a drastically lower cost.

TurboTax includes helper text bubbles that explain jargon and guide you through your tax return. TurboTax also warns you to save your progress before changes are lost and lets you bookmark or flag pages you want to return to. TurboTax shows you a refund meter that calculates your refund and is the only software provider that has an audit triggers meter, which calculates your chance of being audited. You can access past returns for the past seven years for free with all plans except the free plan. TurboTax double-checks your W-2 for proper Federal Income Tax, Social Security, and Medicare withholdings, which is an average error checking system.
TurboTax offers live tax support over the phone, which costs $29.95 for the first 20 minutes and then $19.95 for each additional 20-minute period. Tax support is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT. TurboTax will respond to any tax support question within two hours. TurboTax offers audit support, which helps you find out why the IRS contacted you, determine what it means, and prepare your next steps. TurboTax offers Audit Defense, which means that they will represent you in the event of an audit, schedule and attend all audit appointments and handle all audit correspondence. This costs $39.95.
Wait times for phone, live chat and email were minimal to none when we tested TurboTax tech support. (Closer to the April filing deadline, wait times may vary with increased demand.) We found TurboTax's tech support to be fairly helpful but not very thorough in their explanations. Tech support is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT.
TurboTax is an extremely reliable company, as TurboTax is owned by Intuit Inc. and has been in business for over 20 years.
